IHC issues a notice to ECP

IHC issues a notice to ECP to postpone the municipal elections, which were slated to take place on December 31 in the federal government’s capital city.

ISLAMABAD It was reported that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Wednesday issued a notification at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to consider the delay in the local elections scheduled to be held on December 31 -in the capital city of the Federal Republic.

The change came about following Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir took on the petition of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), who sought to invalidate the ECP’s decision to delay local elections for the city of Islamabad.

It was also reported that the IHC was also able to issue a letter to the Attorney General for Pakistan. Mansoor Usman Awan, for aiding the court during the hearing.

This plea came in following the ECP postponed the elections one day earlier. After it had held an inquiry and listened to all the parties in the case based on the instructions of the IHC.

An increasing number of union councils are point of dispute in battle between political parties, ECP, and the federal government. Which the Centre announced earlier in the month.

At the beginning of the hearing on Wednesday, PTI Awan’s lawyer Sardar Taimoor stated that. The commission published the list of local bodies elections for 50 UCs on June 2.

“The federal government has increased Union councils up to 101. Then, the commission for elections held off the elections to allow for a new delimitation,” the lawyer said.

In the following days in the evening, the ECP released the updated schedule for the local bodies’ elections on October 22. According to the timeline, the elections were scheduled to occur on December 21 21.

According to attorney, the federal authorities had once more raised number of UCs once the last election preparations were complete.

He also mentioned that the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation administrator moved the report for this new UC 12 days later. “How did the administrator get data that the population had increased without a fresh census?” was his question.

The summary of the increased UCs was accepted in less than 24 hours, according to Justice Tahir’s response. The prosecution law, he added, had not been passed despite numerous court petitions.

The lawyer also informed his client that the government has increased the UCs by 125 from 101. That the numbers would not be changed once the schedule was released.

The PTI attorney said that the ECP had already invested millions of rupees in the cause. And the new law that changed the number of us ought to be viewed. As a “proposal” and not a law as the president has not yet approved the legislation.

Next, the court gave notice to the attorney general ECP and postponed the hearing to the following day (December 29).
